Revolution in Mortgage Lending

As of September 30, 2026, a major shift has occurred in the mortgage industry. Both VantageScore and FICO are now viewed equally by lenders when assessing regular home loans. Previously, lenders would impose additional charges for utilizing VantageScore, making it a less favorable option for many borrowers. However, this extra expense has been abolished, offering borrowers more flexibility in choosing their credit score basis.

This change means lenders can now select the higher of the two scores when determining mortgage rates, potentially leading to reduced costs for home buyers. Financial advisor Casey Kunard from NEXA Lending encourages clients to inquire if their lender is considering both scores to determine the best rate. If not, clients are advised to consult with her to ensure they are getting the most competitive deal on their mortgage.
